This paper analyses humorous dialogue in the German hospital TV series Doktor Ballouz. First, the study introduces the role of humor in a medical context. Following a brief examination of the types of humor and their functions in medical communication, the text provides an analysis of the televised depiction of such exchanges based on a few case studies.
Adopting a pragmatic perspective, the paper presents an empirical approach involving mixed methods. An experiment was carried out in the following manner: 1) First, the informants were shown excerpts from the TV series with intralingual subtitles. 2) Their eye movements were recorded using eye tracking technology. 3) They were then asked to complete questionnaires about the scenes they had seen. 4) The context in which this took place was also video-recorded. The study aims to examine humor comprehension by observing reactions. This also prompts reflections on humor appreciation. Therefore, the reactions of the participants to different types of humor were studied in order to hypothesise the possible causes of differences in answers given by participants and, at an individual level, discrepancies between self-reported responses and the findings of the eye tracking surveys. This paper aims to provide useful insights into the comprehension and appreciation of German verbal humour by German speakers and learners of German.
