In this paper, Maria Chiara Marchetti and Anita Virga highlight the main results of a study investigating the experiences of second and third generation Italians in South Africa. The research aimed to explore the sense of italianità of the younger Italian generations living in South Africa. The authors specifically delve into participants’ perceptions of the Italian language and its connection to their sense of Italian identity. The contribution of formal institutions, such as the Dante Alighieri and local universities, towards the promotion of the Italian language in South Africa, is also explored.
